Some great logos and posters on the EuroMayDay site.

“Our struggles happens in everydays live. Our tracks cross the borders of nation, social contracts and gender. Our battles are visible. The social demands are obvious, or maybe not? We speak to Europe, we announce it to the world: we like to surf, and it is our turn to ride the wave. From the 30th April to the 1st of May, we will take the power back, we will regain our creativity and speed. We and everyone who wants to. The banks are everywhere, dominating life, even though they are not alive. The stock markets have shown that only one card needs to be pushed over for the whole castle to collapse.

For this mayday we know the targets!”

The alt.chi papers are due soon, but the template is only in Word. Since I refuse to write any papers in Word (and I dislike OpenOffice Writer slightly less, but just about as much), I decided to try my hand at creating a CHI Extended Abstracts template for LaTeX. Luckily it wasn’t too difficult to get something that works, for the most part. (See the example file for its namesake.) In order to use it, however, you should read the following:

You have to use xelatex . It’s just too difficult to deal with fonts with plain pdfTeX. xelatex makes everything so easy. You need to have Verdana and some form of Helvetica installed.

You have to have the memoir class installed. Like xelatex, memoir makes things so easy in terms of formatting. And it’s available quite widely now, especially if you use texlive.

There are some things that still don’t work; see CHIExtendedAbstracts.cls for details.

Follow the example file to see how things work.

Most importantly, however, are my use, distribution, and modification conditions. I am distributing this class file and its associated example file under the LPPL with the following provisos:

Definitions:

An EXCLUDED PERSON is any individual, group, unit, component, synergistic amalgamation, cash-cow, chunk, CEO, CFO, worker, or organization of a corporation that is a member, as of the date of acquisition of this software, of the Fortune 1000 list of the world’s largest businesses. (See this list for an example of the top 500.) An EXCLUDED PERSON shall also include anyone working in a contractor, subcontractor, slave, or freelance capacity for any member of the Fortune 1000 list of the world’s largest businesses.

Additional conditions:

In direct contradistinction to condition 1 of the LPPL, you are not allowed to use nor run the Work if you are an EXCLUDED PERSON. If you wish to use or run the Work you must contact the Maintainer for a negotiation of a license fee.

If you are currently not an EXCLUDED PERSON (i.e., you are student, staff, or faculty of an academic institution), but you are using the Work in order to write a paper whose topic and content were created while you were an EXCLUDED PERSON, you are not allowed to use nor run the Work and are, for the purposes of this license, considered an EXCLUDED PERSON.

You may not Distribute nor Modify the Work if you are an EXCLUDED PERSON.

If you are in the category of an EXCLUDED PERSON but are interested in using the class file, please contact me at nknouf at this domain.

If you are not an EXCLUDED PERSON you can download the template and associated files .

Look for a review of the conference in the next month or so. I’m now at the Values in Design workshop at Santa Clara University, returning to Ithaca next Sunday/Monday.

I hope to expand upon this paper by the time this year is out.
